Farm holidays
We bought Little Quebb Farm in late 2007 leaving behind professional careers to experience a different kind of life lived at a different pace. It was our aim to create a self sufficient and environmentally friendly smallholding and to provide warm and comfortable self catering holiday accommodation. We hope to provide a rural retreat where people can come and re-charge their batteries away from the strains and stresses of everyday life.
The smallholding is slowly under development. We keep very free range chickens for eggs and rare breed free range Berkshire pigs. These are delightful, sociable and inquisitive animals living in the equivalent of five star pig luxury in our orchard. This is at the far end of our land, well out of sound and smell of the cottages - although pigs are clean animals in their natural habitat with very little smell at all. We make home cured bacon, ham and sausages.
Guests are welcome to make friends with our animals, and join us at feeding time in the morning and late afternoon.
We raised our first chickens for the table in 2009 and became adept at despatching, plucking and preparation. We took delivery of 10 day old goslings in early June 2009. They quickly became an integral part of the establishment, harrassing the chickens who had to learn to stand their ground. They proved to be delightful intelligent characters and we said goodbye to them with heavy hearts in the run up to Christmas. We plan to keep more table chicken, and geese in 2010 and also turn out hands to raising a few turkeys.
We are trying to ensure that our farm and holiday cottages are environmentally friendly and energy efficient. As well as the usual commitment to recycling, we have installed solar panels on the cottage roofs to provide an energy efficient supply of hot water, and have our own supply of bore hole water for the site. We are currently reliant on oil fired central heating, but are exploring the option of a wood fired system.
